This week is all about audio and I’m so excited to talk about music. I’ve talked about a few different passions of mine (aside from books) recently but I haven’t touch music yet.
I love so many different genres and songs that it’s hard to narrow them down for a top ten list, so I’m going to focus in on the artists I keep going back to over the past few months.
Just something about each of these artists has struck a chord with me (pun intended!) and I hope that other people will go check them out!
1 Son Lux
During the past couple of seasons of So You Think You Can Dance I’ve heard five or six songs from this group. Every one is a different mixture of hauntly beautiful, always on the edge of the cliff but never going completely over the line.
Favorites: “You don’t know me” (Tatiana Maslany is in the music video!), “Cage of Bones”, “Easy” (I personally like the remix with Lorde), and “Undone”.
I’ve been a fan of Beyonce since Destiny’s Child, but damn, her album Lemonade is a whole new level for her. Listening to her recent album is like hearing a heart being ripped in two.
Favorites: “Say My Name”, “Drunk in Love”, “Flawless”, “Formation”, “Sorry”.
What can I say about Sia, she’s a powerhouse and I just want more from her. Also my toddler loooooves Cheap Thrills and dances every time it’s on!
Favorites: “Elastic Heart”, “Cheap Thrills”
4 Twenty One Pilots
New to the household, but I was quickly impressed by Stressed Out and the surprising depth of the song. I haven’t been disappointed yet and want to check out some of their older songs.
Favorites: “Stressed Out”, “Heathens”
5 Missy Elliott
I don’t think I can explain in words how much I lost my shit when I saw Missy Elliott at the Super Bowl halftime show. OMG. I also didn’t realize how much I missed her music in my life. I go back and forth between her past and current hits.
Favorites: “Work It”, “Lose Control”, “WTF (Where They From)”
Muse will forever be a favorite. I don’t see a lot of bands live (so dang expensive!) but not only did my hubs and I see them live, we went to Madison Square Garden to do so (we live in MD).
SOME Favorites: “Hysteria”, “Newborn”, “Time is Running Out”, “Stockholm Syndrome”, “Undisclosed Desires”, “Dead Inside”
7 David Bowie
So this year has been a rollercoaster of suck, and David Bowie’s passing still gets to me. I love David Bowie and have for years, going back to Labyrinth (You remind me of the Babe!). Every time I hear Star Man, I want to sob.
I haven’t had the heart to listen to all of Black Star but I will soon.
Favorites: “Starman”, “The Man Who Sold the World”, “Fame”, “Let’s Dance”, “Within You”, “As the World Falls Down”
8 Hamilton the Musical
“I’m not throwing away my shot!
Hey yo, I’m just like my country,
I’m young, scrappy and hungry
And I’m not throwing away my shot!”
9 Kendrick Lamar
Confession: I only recently discovered how awesome Lamar is because I’ve been living under a freaking rock. I heard Swimming Pools and knew I had to get on this. To Pimp a Butterfly is next on my list.
10 Lady Gaga
Every since Bad Romance I’ve been a huge fan of Lady Gaga and excited that she has a new album out in October. Yes, I’m one of her Little Monsters 🙂
Favorites: “Bad Romance”, “Judas”, “Marry the Night”, “Born This Way”, “Telephone”
Anybody else jamming out to the mentioned artists? Who do you think will stand the test of time? (Besides Bowie, duh!)
