June Wrap Up
As I’ll detail further down the post, June fell apart. I hit a wall at the end of the month, so my reading list is smaller than usual. Thankfully the books I did read were pretty fantastic.
Highlights were the two 2017 debuts, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Final Girls. Both were fun in their own ways and highly enjoyable. Final Girls edged out as the best of June, and I would recommend checking out this thriller when it’s out July 11th.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid 8/10
Fates and Furies – Lauren Groff 6/10
Final Girls – Riley Sager 9/10
My Cousin Rachel – Daphne Du Maurier 7/10
If My Dogs Were a Pair of Middle-Aged Men – The Oatmeal 6/10
This month’s pick is Sula by Toni Morrison
Well, last month didn’t work out, but I’ll get to Lord of the Flies later this year. Right now I’m moving on and looking forward.
I remember in high school when kids were reading Beloved by the same author, and because they responded badly to the book I’ve pushed off reading Toni Morrison’s work.
Now I understand that it was probably the students and not the author, so I wanted to give Morrison a chance, especially since other authors I know seem to respect her work.
I Suck at Reading Challenges
As referenced above, by the last week of June I hit a wall. I felt disconnected to everything I was reading.
Sooo I’m still going to try to complete the 20 Books of Summer, but it was silly of me to try and stick to a TBR list. I’ll probably still read at least half of the books on that list, but I need some flexibility. I work best with semi-structure.
I’m also behind on both the Mount TBR and Classics Club Challenge. Thankfully I have three more years for the Classics’ Challenge, plenty of time to catch up. For Mount TBR, I’m going to focus on twenty, because I had to drop four. I realized that I had zero interest in trying to read them, so off to Goodwill they went.
Crossing my fingers for at least a strong finish.
I have a couple of NetGalley reviews coming out this month: See What I Have Done and Sour Grapes. Both come out August 1st!
I’m also going on a well-deserved vacation with my family to Maine! Who-hoo! So I won’t be posting anything in the middle of the month, for about a week. I plan on reading my sad, dark books by a beautiful beach. 🙂
Hope everyone has a chance to getaway this summer!
