Alright readers, this morning I got the Classics Club Spin number and I’m excited to see my pick. The magic number is four and that means my pick is…
Everything is Illuminated – Jonathan Safran Foer
Here is the summary from Goodreads:
“A young man arrives in the Ukraine, clutching in his hand a tattered photograph. He is searching for the woman who fifty years ago saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Unfortunately, however, he is aided in his quest by Alex, a translator with an uncanny ability to mangle English into new forms; a ‘blind’ old man haunted by memories of the war; and an undersexed guide dog named Sammy Davis, Jr, Jr. What they are looking for seems elusive – a truth hidden behind veils of time, language and the horrors of war.”
Confession time: For my Classic Club list, I wanted all my picks to be older than me, and I swear, I thought Everything is Illuminated was from the 70s. I just realized that I’m completely and utterly wrong, and the book was published in 2002 (guess the picture of the author should’ve clued me in). So Everything is Illuminated is the special snowflake of my list. Why I thought it was older? No clue.
Well, I still want to read this book, so I’m sticking with my pick. Due to my error, my review is going to be slightly different, and focus on whether I think Everything is Illuminated should stand the test of time. Hey, just trying to make lemonade out of lemons.
