To A Brand New Year

2017 started out with two family members in the hospital for serious conditions (both are doing great now!), followed by the inauguration of our 45th president, Donald Trump. Needless to say, this year has been a rough one.

Despite a harsh beginning, I was able to keep up a decent momentum for the first half of the year, only to spin out of control somewhere in the fall. For me, stress strangles creativity, and after a string of lackluster books I knew I had to take some time off.

I’m glad I did, but when I came back my heart was definitely looking towards the future instead of the present. Sadly that hurt the challenges I set up for myself this year, and wasn’t able to complete the TBR for 2017.

After some soul searching, I made some decisions and goals for the upcoming year.

  1. I’m completely ditching NetGalley. I know for some this is a fantastic tool, but sadly it just wasn’t worth it to me. Between my shelves and the library I realized that I have what I need.
  2. The challenges I set forth for this year are important to me, so quarterly I’m going to focus on all of them and talk about my progress.
  3. I’m testing out theme months! I got the idea when I saw a few bloggers participate in Nonfiction November. At the beginning of each month I’ll have a post going into the theme and my TBR for it. I have the first four months planned:

January = Historical Fiction (expect the kick-off post tomorrow!)

February = Scifi

March = Fantasy

April = YA

I think those are the major ones for now. My family is planning to move over the summer, so we’ll see how things turn out.

Hey! Here’s something for those who stuck through this post till the end…

  1. We share a lot of favorites and you’ve got a few on here I plan to read. I’m not giving up NetGalley but I definitely want to scale back on ARCs in 2018. When I get too many ARCs I feel under a lot of pressure to read on a schedule and then I can’t always read what I want. Happy 2018 and good luck with your goals and theme months!
